2015 Lünendonk Study: Roever Broenner Susat Mazars in ninth place of the leading audit firms in Germany

Added value for German companies: independent inter-national audit and advisory services

Hamburg – Owing to the merger announced in April 2015, Roever Broenner Susat Mazars was able to move up one notch in the ranking of the leading audit firms in comparison to last year. The Lünendonk Study, the most current analysis of the audit firm market, has just been released today and shows that Roever Broenner Susat Mazars now ranks ninth with its revenues of around EUR 110 million.

By crossing the 100-million euro revenue mark, the merged German company seated in Hamburg has now reached a critical size in other related areas: With approximately 1,000 employees being led by 68 partners at twelve business locations in Germany as well as with being integrated in the international Mazars partnership, our firm can be recommended as a primary choice for listed and owner-managed companies seeking an alternative when selecting an audit and advisory firm.

“Of course, we are very pleased about our improved Lünendonk ranking among the leading audit firms in Germany, which was especially due to our merger with Mazars Deutschland,” stated Dr. Jost Wiechmann, partner at Roever Broenner Susat Mazars. “But size is not everything; this merger strategy is of much greater importance in view of internationalisation.” Internationally Mazars has made a formidable name for itself – worldwide there are 500 listed companies that have placed their trust in the expertise of Mazars.

The founding firms of RBS RoeverBroennerSusat can look back on an almost 100 year-old success story in Germany. In the last three years RBS has consistently maintained its ranking on the Lünendonk List among the top ten audit firms in Germany. “Through this merger Roever Broenner Susat Mazars, as an independent partner-managed firm, offers German companies a comprehensive range of services from one hand combined with a long tradition of having the required strength in Germany, the home country of many of our clients, while now being able to push our presence forward on the international market in offering our international advisory services,” Dr. Jost Wiechmann commented further.

The benefits of an international partnership

It is quite evident at the international level that Mazars clearly stands head and shoulders above its competitors: Mazars is also an international partnership with offices in 73 countries worldwide, in which the German partners became members through the merger. The benefit of being in this organisation of partners versus international networks similar to franchises is readily apparent on the customer side: within the partnership it is ensured that cross-border client care is of a consistent, high-level quality. Partners in Malaysia, South Africa or Brazil all have the same keen interest in satisfying their clients as our partners have in satisfying their German clients. The close cooperation within the international Mazars partnership also offers practical benefits to clients, which not only guarantee high quality but also increased efficiency and the possibility of optimising their processes.

Challenges facing audit firms in the future

With this merger Roever Broenner Susat Mazars has not only gained strength to face client challenges in the future. Also from the perspective of challenges facing the audit firm market, the company is ideally positioned and well prepared. 87 of the audit firms surveyed by Lünendonk in the 2015 market study, in particular, emphasised the shortage of professionals, price pressures and EU regulations as the most prominent factors affecting their business success.

“Our clients have always considered the high quality of our services and our impressive industry expertise to be invaluable. And they are prepared to pay a realistic price for this,” reported Dr. Jost Wiechmann.

”Furthermore within the Mazars partnership, we have harnessed the collective intelligence of almost 770 partners worldwide, along with their 15,000 employees in order to continue to develop our services, to expand our industry expertise internationally as well as to continuously train our employees.” It is very important for newly-recruited young professionals and experienced professionals recruited from other firms to work closely with their partners. This aspect along with gaining expertise in hands-on solutions, in contrast to working in policy or specialised departments, with cooperating with international colleagues as well as with working with reputable clients are good reasons for applying for a job at an audit firm, oriented toward medium-sized companies, which may also be operating worldwide.

Also the opportunity to develop personally at home in Germany or abroad at the global level, for example, by working at one of the German desks of a Mazars firm in another country as well as the certification as a family-friendly firm, audit berufundfamilie, are factors that have helped Roever Broenner Susat Mazars gain and maintain a successful stance amongst it competitors.

Lünendonk has determined the average growth rate of the top 25 audit firms to have been 6% for the current financial year. In conjunction with merging with Mazars, RBS RoeverBroennerSusat has changed its financial year from ending as at 31 December to ending as at 31 August. Therefore the 2015 financial year for the firm is a so-called short financial year with reduced revenue. Notwithstanding, Roever Broenner Susat Mazars considers itself to be positioned for the future: “Since we have strengthened our market position with our merger and have brought synergistic benefits to both firms, we are thus very optimistic that we will continue to also grow organically”, according to Dr. Jost Wiechmann in discussing the firm’s positive outlook for the future.
